Latest Edinburgh Apprentice Recruits

Two new recruits from Edinburgh have both been offered the opportunity to complete their apprenticeship with James Frew Ltd increasing the company's modern Apprentices to 36.

The company reached out to SNIPEF (Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employer’s Federation) in the hope they would know candidates who were not able to be kept on after their course or had been made redundant halfway through their apprenticeship recently. A selection of individuals were interviewed and the successful recruits were offered a position.

Callum Wilson, who has just turned 26, will be joining the company as a 2nd Year Plumbing Apprentice. Callum will be placed at Apple Apartments, Canongate Edinburgh carrying out Plumbing Installations under the guidance of foreman plumber, David Logan. Whereas Stuart Thompson, 20 will be joining the company as a 3rd Year Plumbing Apprentice. Stuart will be working at Granton Harbour, Edinburgh carrying out Plumbing Installations under the help and guidance of experienced foreman plumber Eric Liddell.

Stuart said, ‘’I was so pleased and thankful when I found out I had passed the interview and been given this unique opportunity. I am very excited to finish my apprenticeship with such a big company.’’

Callum added, ‘’I really appreciate the opportunity James Frew have given me to carry on my apprenticeship which wasn’t possible in my last job. I’ve moved from working in houses to big sites and although most of it’s new to me I can’t wait to get started and learn everything they have to offer.’’

The latest recruits are aspiring to achieve the same path as colleague Dean Little (pictured) has achieved to date. Dean started as an apprentice, moved on to Tradesman, Foreman and now Project Engineer with James Frew Ltd.

Plumbing apprentice Paul Marshall is set to test his skills against some of the United Kingdom's most accomplished students and apprentices during the WorldSkills UK National Finals in Greater Manchester on 15th-16th November. In his quest to be named SkillPLUMB champion, Paul will have to tackle a complex task that involves the installation of a central heating system and hot/cold water system, incorporating a boiler, unvented hot water cylinder and associated pipework and bespoke designed copper radiators. James Frew Managing Director Roddy Frew said: "I was delighted to learn that Paul has been selected to represent James Frew and West College Scotland at UK World Skills. He is an ambassador for James Frew and has consistently produced work of a very high standard. These types of experiences are essential for apprentices to test their practical skills and meta-skills and benchmark themselves against the best in the UK." We wish Paul all the very best in the final – good luck!
