A crack team of elite James Frew golfers ran out worthy winners at the annual Kilmarnock Football Club sponsors golf day at Trump Turnberry.
Captained by Killie Manager Derek McInnes who led the team of Roddy Frew, Murray Frew and Gordon Mack to an emphatic victory in a nail-biting Texas Scramble competition. We commissioned a sport reporter to cover the event and provide an accurate and irreverent account of the win.
Glorious March weather got the competition off to a great start. Head of Operations Gordon Mack, into a stiff wind, drove the green at the 3rd hole and McInnes tramlined a 45-foot putt for the first eagle of day. Gordon has recalled the story many times this week, with varying degrees of wind strength ranging from a gentle breeze to Hurricane Gordon.
Gordon said: “My driving has been a bit erratic recently” which was confirmed by Transport Manager Paul McGoldrick who checked the dashcam footage and recommended Gordon should have taken up the offer of a lift down next time.
Roddy asked Murray what he thought of the links today and Murray replied: “I’m not too sure Roddy, it was roll on bacon I had for breakfast”. Procurement specialist Murray couldn’t “buy” a putt on the front 9 but was rolling them in for fun after he eventually got going.”.
Reflecting on his performance laser focused Murray said: “I lost a few golf balls today, but I did make it all the way round with the same pencil which I am delighted about as I recently had it re-gripped.”.
Low handicapper Roddy also managed to win Golfer of the Day and was delighted with his solid performance. Congratulating Roddy on his achievements, Gordon said: “See what happens when you play with better golfers!”.
The boys had a great day wandering about the rough looking for Gordon’s other 17 drives.
A source close to Killie FC said Derek McInnes was delighted with a win.
